A Look Inside The AHC 2019 Advisory Board Meeting

25 January 2019

The AHC 2019 Advisory Board took place earlier this week, generously hosted by the Bankside Hotel, an Autograph Collection hotel. The independently owned Bankside Hotel opened its doors in autumn 2018 and aims to reflect the natural environment of its surrounding whilst serving as a creative and inspiring community hub.

Bankside has ambitions to be the one of London’s most sustainable hotels with low VOC paint used to reduce emissions, solar panels installed and an extensive waste management programme to achieve its zero-landfill-waste target.

A fitting venue for a collaborative meeting with some great minds from across the hospitality industry and champions of The AHC.

The advisory board meeting serves to garner insight into the most pressing issues facing the industry at present which we, in turn, use to build the conference programme ensuring it includes the most relevant topics and discussions for those attending The AHC.

A key area highlighted is ever-increasing labour costs including the impending National Minimum Wage rise which will have a continuous impact through all grades of personnel in order to maintain wage differentials. An increase in pension contributions in April adds further pressure to the P&L account for owners and operators.

Another interesting area of discussion was the growing number of local authorities who are investing in hotel schemes as a way of facilitating regeneration. This is notable as they have different commercial imperatives than private sector investors; they take a much longer-term view, they are unlikely to sell on the development on completion or at stabilised trading and so they take a 40-year not three to five year view. Whilst there are currently only a handful of such schemes it serves as a great reminder that the hotel sector is not only an increasingly attractive asset class in its own right, but also a facilitator of regeneration and revitalisation.

Happily the overall mood of the meeting was upbeat with all attendees fully engaged with The AHC, its purpose and position within the UK hospitality industry.
